Sports Hall: A Breathtaking Design by Hani Hassan

A New Standard for Excellence in Sports Activity Buildings

This breathtaking sports hall design has raised the standard of excellence for sports activity buildings in Palestine. Designed by Hani Hassan, this $12 million project features a portal frame steel structure spanning up to 65 meters, mounted on a concrete support structure. It can host 7000 spectators to enjoy sports, academic, and cultural activities, setting a new standard for sustainable architecture.

The design of this 12,000 square meter multipurpose sports hall is a result of a coordinated plan between architecture and structural design, considering factors such as safety and sustainability. The upper level features insulated aluminum cladding, while the lower level is adorned with local stone facades, combining modern architecture with traditional elements.

One of the unique features of this design is its emphasis on sustainability. The building saves 45% of energy by generating electricity from its 4000 square meter roof PV solar panels. Additionally, the roof rainwater harvesting system can reduce water consumption by up to 2000 cubic meters per year. The passive cooling system relies on over 300 motorized windows, creating a simple cross ventilation system that reduces the usage of mechanical ventilation by 50%.

The sports hall is designed with the comfort and convenience of its users in mind. It has 10 entrances for fast evacuation on all floors, with handicapped accessibility in all levels. Natural light is maximized to minimize power consumption, and the 300 motorized windows provide natural ventilation and passive cooling. The building will serve as the center of the university's academic, cultural, sports, and exhibition activities.

The project, which started in January 2014 in Jenin, Palestine, was completed in January 2016. The design team, led by Hani Hassan, included Mahmoud Abdallah for the structural design. Extensive research was conducted to determine client needs, building typology, and functions. Weather data, local architectural typology, and building impact were collected and analyzed to arrive at this unique design.

This remarkable sports hall design has been recognized for its excellence. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2014 in the category of Architecture, Building, and Structure Design. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.

With its striking design, sustainable features, and commitment to excellence, the Sports Hall by Hani Hassan has set a new standard for sports activity buildings in Palestine. It is a testament to the power of design to create functional and beautiful spaces that enhance the lives of their users.
